Intel’s i5-520UM Core Processor: A Closer Look
The Intel i5-520UM looks to pick up where Intel left off with their Celeron 743, and line of Core 2 Solo processors. Even though the clock speed is rated at 1.066GHz don’t let that fool you. The architecture of the i5 chip is to allow it to be faster than a higher clocked Core 2 Solo chip with some additional features.
First is the ability to go into Turbo mode. This allows the processor to ratchet up from 1.066GHz to 1.86GHz. Depending on the application your using and the strain being put on the processor it knows when to add more juice. Doing so comes at the expense of battery life but sometimes getting things done is more important than being able to look at your computer screen for several hours on end.
The i5-520UM is a dual core chip similar to the SU4100 except that this i5 has 3MB of cache and is 64 bit with support for DDR3.
Oddly enough, the chip was introduced in Q1 2010 yet there aren’t any computer which actually use it. The 1830T from Acer looks to be the first, but there is also the possiblity of a 13.3 inch X360 from MSI. No word on pricing of computers with this chip but my guess would be in the $499 to $549 range. The benefit you get in having the faster and newer chip is balanced by having Intel integrated graphics.
Stay tuned.
