1830T Acer TimelineX: The New King Of Netbooks?

There’s a good reason why Acer is the top netbook seller around the world (and soon to pass HP as top computer seller).  They have a variety of products which cater to almost all audiences.  Back in 2009, they released the Acer Aspire 1410 which is still one of the most versatile ultraportable computers with it’s combination of low price, multimedia features and ease of upgrading.

The 1830T looks to follow in those footsteps to a pretty large extent while also making sure to be a few steps ahead of everybody else.

As I type this post on my Asus 1101HA I can attest to the beauty of the 11.6″ screen.  12.1″ just seems too big and 10.1″ is definitely too small.  At 11.6″ you’re able to pick it up carry it with you and not worry about hitting anyone between points A and B.  This just might be psychological but I’m sure I’m not the only one.  Acer and it’s daughter brand Gateway have kept the 11.6″ netbook space alive singlehandedly.  The 1830T looks to continue this tradition.

Taking a page from Asus’ playbook the 1830T will come with an aluminum palm rest and trackpad.  It make take some getting used since there aren’t any pronounced physical cues to let you know where the trackpad begins and ends but you are reward with two distinct mouse buttons which many netbook makes no longer provide.

If you’re looking to do more than just browse the web with your netbook the 1830T provides many features which make it up for the task at hand.  The presence of an HDMI port means that you’ll be able to stream your video, pictures or whatever else quickly and easily with projectors or HDTVs.  Next you have an i5 Core processor under the hood which can quickly go from 1.07GHz to 1.86GHz depending on what your doing.  This may be one of the few netbooks you can actually load Photoshop or AutoCAD on without fear of embarrassing yourself.  The i5 processor get paired with 4GB of RAM meaning that it will come with Windows 7 Home Premium.

Another pain points which gets address is the ability to upgrade in the future.  Many netbook manufacturers make it impossible to even upgrade the memory without taking the whole thing apart and voiding the warranty (MSI, I’m looking at you).  Acer doesn’t care and with just a few screws you can update the hard drive, memory or switch out the mini-PCIe card.

Unfortunately everything isn’t perfect.  The 1830T’s screen is super duper glossy so if a matte screen is your preference you’re going to be disappointed.  Also, even though Acer is sending out 1830’s with i5 Core chips in them their website says it will come with the Intel SU3500 processor which is clocked at 1.4GHz.  This could be a misprint or a last minute audible.

The 1830T is not available yet so no conclusions can be made but from the looks of things it is shaping up to be the new “King of netbooks.”
