Asus 1001PX: More Gimmick Than Goodies?

One thing Asus showed us with their announced prior to and during CEBit 2010 is that they are willing to put out as many variations of their models as they need to in order to beat Acer in the netbook space.  Many of their new models look good and seem to have a space in the already crowded netbook vertical.  The 1001PX seem to fall out of the boundaries for a few reasons.

- The only innovation appears to be the composition of the lid.  While the 1005PE-PU27 is special because it add a matte lid to the mix, the addition of a carbon fiber look doesn’t seem as appealing especially if the option is used to further raise the price of this mid-range netbook.

- With so many other 1001 series and 1005 series netbooks available this netbook is likely to get caught in the shuffle.  It may end up being a non-US model as Europe has a much bigger appetite for these ultraportable machines but even there it would be hard for this to be more than just an also-ran.

- People are waiting desperately for netbooks with ION2.  Anything else at this moment is going to get looked over unless it brings something really compelling to the party.

- Even with a carbon fiber lid, the 1001PX is heavier than the U160 from MSI which weights only 2.6lbs.  That netbook doesn’t need carbon fiber to be light.

For those curious here are the specs for the 1001PX netbook:

Technical specifications Asus Eee PC 1001PX

  • Processor: Intel Atom N450 a 1,66 GHz
  • Memory: 1024 MB DDR2

  • Webcam: 0,3 Mpixels Webcam: 0.3 Mpixels
  • Battery: 3-cell

Asus has also employed tactics their competitors didn’t and it’s results in great success for the netbook maker so far.  Hopefully this deluge of new models will be to their benefit and not their detriment.

Different versions are made for different countries. The post is about the EU version which has the specs listed about. Great to hear that it doesn't cost more here in the US for the Carbon fiber lid as it's a seemingly cosmetic upgrade.

    Thanks for sharing.

I am slightly confused. everyone knows that adding Carbon fiber makes things twice as fast, but this is just as fast as every other N450 powered netbook!?!? ;-)

Carbon fiber just means that it's lighter. It doesn't have anything to do with performance.

It was a car joke. Just like putting flames on a car "ads 10 horsepower" (also a joke) :P
