1201N vs. U230 Netbook Battle [Benchmarks]

The U230-040US is available for sale (in stock) from Buy.com for $485.

I won’t hide any suspense, the U230 handily pummeled the Asus 1201N.  While real use and benchmarks may not always be the same the U230 bested the 1201N in almost every single benchmark used to compare the two netbooks.

A lot of times benchmarks are hard to compare because the same types of benchmarks aren’t used.  This time, the benchmark software is exactly the same.  Both netbook were rated using SiSoft SANDRA.

To come up with the mathematical proof that the U230 is better I took reviews for each from different places:

Asus 1201N netbook review – Hothardware.com
MSI Wind U230-040US – Testfreaks

Test MSI Wind U230 Asus 1201N
CPU Arith – Agg 9.44 7.25
CPU Arith – Dhrystone 9.33 7.78
CPU Arith – Whetstone 9.54 6.7

The CPU Arithmetic test measures the number crunching capabilities of the L335 AMD processor vs the 330 Intel Atom.  This test is measured in Gigaflops (Gflops).  The higher the number, the better.

Test MSI Wind U230 Asus 1201N
CPU Multimedia – Aggregate 15 15.3
Multi-media Int x8 18.5 17.42
Multi-media Float X4 11 13.2
Multi-media Double X2 6.15 2.47

The CPU Multimedia test measures the capabilities of the system as a whole.  Specifically, it measures the performance of the (W)MMX(2), SSE(2/3/4), AVX processor units. This test is measured in Gigaflops (Gflops).  The higher the number, the better.

Test MSI Wind U230 Asus 1201N
Memory Bandwidth – Agg 3.75 2.59
Memory Bandwidth – Int Buffered 3.76 2.6
Memory Bandwidth – Float 3.71 2.57

The Memory Bandwidth test measures the memory bandwidth of each computer system.  This test is measured in Megabits per second (Mb/s).  The higher the number, the better.

There you have it.  By the numbers the MSI U230-040 bests the Asus 1201N.

  • I'm happy I ended up buying the U230!
  • Don't get it wrong mate but these platforms are no netbooks at all! The Atom 330 is a desktop cpu and the AMD cpu is far from being mobile and power efficient. Also netbooks are limited to a screensize of 12.1-inch. These are subnoteboooks!
  • Seems the Toshiba T115D-S1125 would be close to the U230 in performance. What do you think?

    Hey Matt,

Great question. For the money I'd leave the Toshiba alone and stick with the MSI. Firstly the MSI is a 12 inch netbook vs. 11.6 with the T115D.

Next, the MSI has bluetooth, gigabit ethernet, and 802.11n Wi-fi. The Toshiba has none of these.

MSI is making a big deal of their keyboard while people have griped about the keyboard on the T115D. The only thing the T115D has going for it is that you can charge electronics while it's sleeping.

Those are the facts. From there, I'll let you decided but I'd chose MSI.
