M11x From Alienware: The Gamers Netbook

Dell want you to get so turned on about being able to play games on a netbook and be able to stream HD video that you’re going to look past the pricetag.  $799 for any computer isn’t a walk in the park especially for something with a screen smaller than 12 inches.

It certainly isn’t a slouch.  Weighing in at slightly over 4lbs the M11x is packing a 1GB video card.  Most other netbooks only have 128 or 256MB.

Instead of an Intel Atom processor, Dell is throwing in a SU4100 Intel processor.  The SU4100 clocks in at 1.2Ghz but pack 2MB of cache.  The increase in cache allows it to execute programs and access files quicker.

Check out all of the M11x specs for yourself.

The question isn’t about what I can tell you about it, but hear’s what Hardware Heaven had to say:

Upon turning the machine on we are presented with some great touches like the backlit keyboard, which is both responsive and comfortable to use. The touchpad with its honeycomb design is also high quality and the mouse buttons, despite a rather deep action work well and are near silent.

The screen used by Alienware is also impressive, offering crystal clear clarity and a good level of brightness. On the audio front we were also pleased that the speakers used by Alienware give a decent volume level, more than enough to watch a movie on and they do not suffer from distortion or a tinny sound at any reasonable volume level.

On the outside the M11x is a complete success and inside this continues. Considering the specification of the components inside the system the temperatures recorded were great and the chassis design allowed us to use the laptop on our legs, even when full load was applied to the CPU and GPU. Due to the single fan design adopted by Alienware noise was also kept to a minimum under these conditions.

The complete package doesn’t come cheap.  Great video performance, battery life, light up keyboard, and ultra vibrant screen all in one 11.6″ package.
