Intel Plans 32nm Atom Chip For 2010/2011 Launch

If you’ve been enjoying your Pine Trail netbook you might not want to read the rest of this post.
Intel is planning on taking their Intel platform to another level by shrinking the size of their processors down to 32nm. They currently produce their current line of netbook processors as 45nm parts. The benefit of the smaller size is typically lower power consumption which is necessary when it comes to portable computers with limited battery life.
In addition to saving power Intel has other plans for their new 32nm processors. Codenamed “Medfield” or “Cedar Trail,” these processors will continue with integrating the graphics chipset being built into the chip itself. Intel predicts that this new version of Intel Atom will be twice as fast as current N450 processors. This claim was made using a benchmark which may not translate into a real doubling of performance.
While initial claims were that Cedar Trail processors would launch in 2010 this date has been pushed back to 2011 due to the late production of N450 chips. They will likely be announced in Winter 2010, demoed at CES 2011 and hit netbooks in January similar to how Intel introduced Pine Trail to the public.
