EC14D07u Gateway Netbook Adds DVD Drive

Gateway’s parent company has been on a tear lately releasing new updated netbooks left and right.  First Acer comes out with their N450 netbooks, then they release the eM250 under their eMachines brand and now they are pushing netbooks even further with the new Gateway EC14D07u.  What makes it so different from other netbooks? As you can tell from the image above; it comes with a DVD drive.  Netbooks have long been defined by their light weight and lack of a media drive but this netbook changes all of that.

Here are the specs for the Gateway EC14D07u:

  • Intel® Pentium® ULV Processor SU4100 (1.3GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • 11.6-inch HD Widescreen Ultrabright LED-backlit TFT LCD (1366 x 768 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio)
  • Mobile Intel®GS45 Express Chipset
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
  • 4096MB DDR2 Dual-Channel 667MHz memory upgradeable to 8GB
  • 320GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive
  • Integrated 8X Super-Multi DVD player
  • Integrated webcam
  • Multi-in-1 digital media card reader
  • Intel® Wi-Fi Link 1000 802.11b/g/Draft-N WiFi CERTIFIED® featuring MIMO technology
  • Gigabit Ethernet LAN
  • Three USB 2.0 ports
  • HDMI port
  • Multi-Gesture Touchpad
  • Standard 6-cell Li-ion (5600 mAh) Battery

These features don’t come cheap as the EC14D07u retails for $629.  This means that you’re paying a $200 premium for having a built in DVD burner.  For that price it might be more worthwhile to buy an external so you only add weight to it when necessary.  A lot of people are excited about having everything in one but once you pay more than $600 you have to wonder if a full powered notebook wouldn’t be a better choice.

  • The Gateway uses an Intel Pentium EC14D07u SU4100 processor, LED 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and a 11.6-inch HD screen with back-light. The machine has a 6-cell lithium-ion battery. The notebook has Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, three USB ports and an 8x DVD drive. The notebook has a decent keyboard with large keys, which is easy to type on. The input of feel and feedback on the keyboard is good.
  • This is an awesome Prize Package.

so who is actually selling this laptop. can't seem to find it anywhere?
  • Chance_Stevens
It looks like no one is selling it at the moment. There aren't any web stores with it in stock, and when I search I don't see any local stores selling it either. Once I see that someone is selling it I'll be sure to write a follow up post.

I've been looking for one since it was announced. Finally talked to someone at Gateway customer support and know one there knew when it would be released to stores.

I travel for work a lot so I like the convenience of a built-in DVD. Over the long run (assuming it lasts) the convenience out weighs the $200.

I'm sure Gateway (and Acer) are happy to know there's demand for a combo netbook like this. I understand how much of a trouble it can be trying to bring a lot of different parts with you. The additional cost may just be worth just for having the extra sanity of not being able to forget something at home or in a hotel room.

Thanks for sharing Jim and I'll be sure to post when it finally becomes available.
