Asus 1005PE Netbook Memory Issues

Several owners of Asus 1005PE netbooks are running into a problem.  It turns out that upgrading the memory from 1GB to 2GB isn’t as easy as it seems.  Many people were upgrading to a single 2GB stick of PC2 6400 to make it easier for the netbook to run in Super Performance mode.

After installing the 2GB memory chip the users discovered issues with the computer booting into Windows or spontaneously losing the ability.

One of the few things which is known at this point is that the PC2 6400 2GB SODIMM from Crucial does not work.  Crucial may not want to cop to the fact that it doesn’t work or be working on a fix but in the meantime you should just stay the heck away from it.  The part number of the memory which currently does not work is CT25664AC800.

While there isn’t a definite list of what works and what doesn’t people are having luck using CGM2X2GS800 from Corsair.  This memory sells for about $55 but it’s guaranteed to just pop in and work.

A word of caution for people who end up doing the upgrade.  Make sure to go into the BIOS and turn off the quick boot option.  Then install the memory and turn the computer back off.  From there you should be able to turn the feature back on and not have any issues from there.

After doing some research it looks like the issue may have to do with the timing of the memory.  It boils down to the CAS Latency or CL of the memory.  The memory the 1005PE like needs to be CL5 in order for it to work.

I just installed Crucial CT25664AC800 2GB, ran BIOS setup, selected load defaults, saved and exited. Went back in and my memory is recognized, have not had any booting problems.

Had a similar problem when adding 2 GB to a Gateway LT2107H netbook. I installed Patriot DDR2 667 memory and even though I set the QuickBoot to off it fails to boot.

hello Duncan, i too have a LT2107H netbook, and i am experiencing issues with the same ram model. however for me, i installed the ram, by just shutting the computer off, then taking the Patriot 2 GB stick out of my former laptop and swapping it into the netbook. now in the BIOS it shows 2048MB of ram ( which is correct) however, in the control panel>system and security> system ( you can click the windows icon + pausebreak to acess this) it shows only 1 GB of ram :(
can you help me out please

    Hi Driodstar501,
Try setting the Quickboot to off in the CMOS. On my system I had to try 3 manufacturers of 2 GB sticks til I got one that would boot. In your case you're able to boot but the system is reporting the memory incorrectly - the Quiickboot option prevents the system from properly assessing memory and you should try turning it off and then see what Windows reports. Hope this helps.

Had the same problem with Centon memory, not booting up even with Quickboot turned off per your advice. Which manufacturer's 2GB worked for you?

Sorry to hear that, it looks like a lot of netbooks are a little iffy when it comes to memory. Hopefully it all gets fixed soon with firmware updates.
