Netbook Owners Crave Keyboards With Backlight

As I write this post, it’s 2am EST on a Friday.  The only light available in the room is the light coming from the screen of my netbook and the television on the other side of the room.  Even though my typing seems plenty loud to me what seems to wake my wife up is when I try to post with the light on.  I’ve tried those little book lights and even those glow in the dark letters you can put on your keyboard which can take forever to put on or take off.  All of this makes me realize that at some point someone has to come up with a netbook with a keyboard that lights up.

I realize that it will be an energy waster, but if you can turn wifi, bluetooth or the webcam on and off with the flick of a switch or pressing a few button there’s no reason why a light up keyboard has to be any different.  Will it be Acer? Asus? HP?  Sadly none of the companies will step up to the plate and offer this because they don’t have research they had to overpay for to give people what they want.

With 2010 underway companies are going to look for ways of differentiating their product so they can charge more for it.  I can’t imagine getting the keyboard to light up would cost more than a few dollars to rig and I’m sure whoever does it first will see that a whole bunch of people would line up to buy such a netbook.

They’d all just have to get in line behind me.

Yes, a backlit keyboard was my #1 priority since I often work in low-light conditions. What's wrong with these companies not to provide the options that so many people want? It's the constant question: do these people really use the products they design? For example, why did it take 50 years for car companies to put in cup holders? Finally Dell learned this with their 1440 Studios, which I finally purchased after returning that XPS with its horrible glossy design. Again, why do they still make these things? Hopefully, Dell and others will be making backlit keyboards in the future, or at least as an option. So until then, no netbook.

    Excellent article Chance.
I totally agree. I am of the opinion all netbooks and notebooks should be backlit.
