With DDR3 picking up steam and working it’s way to becoming the standard for computer memory chips, DDR2 may end up as the de facto standard for netbooks in 2010.  Prices for DDR2 chips have remained steady while DDR3 prices have been heading up and may command a premium over DDR2 memory into 2010.

As manufacturers decide what memory to pair with their new netbooks cost will be a primary consideration.  Netbooks have been known for the great value they provide to customers.  If they all come equipped with DDR3 manufacturers would have to accept making less per unit sold or try to raise prices in hopes of customer not balking and looking at cheaper laptops instead of light netbooks.

The only netbook I’ve seen ship with DDR3 is the HP 311.  Even the new Pine Trail netbooks are coming out with DDR2 memory which support this theory.  There are lots of models which still haven’t come out yet so this isn’t conclusive however it looks like we should all prepare for DDR2 to remain the norm.
