Can Chrome OS Overtake Windows With Netbooks?

Google has prided itself on high ambitions.  What started as a college project has transformed into a multi-billion dollar empire built on advertising.  They have been inching their way into Microsoft’s backyard.  Their GMail takes on Hotmail, while their Google Apps aim to replace Microsoft Office.  Recently Google released their Chrome browser to join the crowded browser market where Internet Explorer has been losing share to Safari and Firefox.

Google’s Chrome OS is an even more deliberate attack to go after Microsoft’s bottom line.  Life almost everything else Google offers, the OS is free which promises to provide netbooks which are cheaper than their XP counterparts.  Chrome has several benefits including better drivers for video streaming, and faster boot times.

This may all sound fine and good but there are a few things you’ll be missing out on.

- Million of people have to use Microsoft Office to do business.  Those people wouldn’t be able to make it with the Chrome OS.

- Even though casual, browser-based games are all the rage there are a percentage of people who would rather play PC games.  Even though netbooks aren’t the most practical when it comes to graphic processing, it’s still possible with a Windows based netbook.

Expect computer manufacturers to let Chrome be an available option with dual boot functionality.  If sales and usability indicate actual demand for Chrome it should start rolling out in a much more meaningful way.
