AMD Congo Vs. Intel Atom Vs. Intel CULV

The AMD Congo platform is a combination of a 1.6GHz Athlon Neo X2 L335 processor and ATI Radeon HD 3200 video card.  This makes it very similar to the ION platform which combines an Nvidia 9400M video card and Intel Atom processor.

With new netbooks cropping up with AMDs new Congo platform it only makes sense to put it up against Intel’s Atom and CULV chipsets with Intel integrated graphics.

When all is said and done, AMDs Congo platform is going to be in great shape but it all depends on how the pricing is going to shape up.  Nvidia ION netbooks commands a significant premium over typical Atom netbooks with integrated Intel graphics.  There are rumors which put AMD Congo powered netbooks at $800 which put it in a territory only Sony has been crazy enough to go after.

Congo shines when it comes to video playback, games, and other intense applications.  The downside is that being optimized for video means that more power is being used which takes away from battery power.  AMD has work to do in making their Neo processor use less energy.  Until then, it looks like advantages in performance are coming but the consideration is always price.

People looking for inexpensive netbooks will opt for Intel Atom netbooks while people looking to save but want to watch online video will choose an ION based netbook.  Those looking for a thin and light notebook with a larger screen will end up with an Intel CULV notebook and for those looking to get the best ultra thin computer option possible will likely end up choosing a Congo powered computer.  This move up market for AMD is risky decision but with more and more people looking to enjoy the power of a desktop with the weight of a PDA, it just might work.
