Qualcomm is a little worried about making money and it has good reason to be concerned. It has the CDMA market cornered but with Verizon talking about moving to LTE and Sprint moving towards WiMax, they may end up with no one to sell their chips to.
This explains why they’ve come with Snapdragon as a platform for netbooks. Instead of joining the pissing match with Psion, Qualcomm is calling computers using their chips “smartbooks.” This will only help to further confuse people who have just gotten used to calling them netbooks, but that isn’t the issue.
According to Qualcomm:
Smartbooks based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform deliver:
- Optimized power management for all-day battery life
- Ubiquitous, real-time connectivity
- Rich Internet browsing experience
- Access to real-time, personalized and location-aware content
- Streaming and playback of locally stored high-definition video content
- High performance 3D UIs, games, maps and more
- High-quality still pictures and video clips
- Access to social networks through instant messaging, video conferencing and chat
Expect computers using this technology to start hitting retail shelves by the end of 2009.
