Will Best Buy Make Their Own Netbook?
Maybe. They just might. Best Buy is a gadget behemoth and part of the reason why is because they sell products under their own name. If you ever see an HDTV made by Insignia you’re looking at a Best Buy private label product. They use some of the best OEM to make their product but don’t have to pay for the marketing other brands have to in order to get people interested in purchasing it.
Netbooks are a hot product category and the way things currently stand they don’t make anyone much money. For Best Buy to continue selling netbooks two things will have to happen: a) they’ll have to be based on Windows XP, b) they’ll have to make more money on them. Making sure they do part A will prevent people from returning them and force Best Buy to recall them.
It’s important to remember that not too long ago Best Buy made their own laptops under the VPR Matrix brand. Now may be the perfect time for the retailer to dust off the VPR Matrix name or maybe Insignia brand and take the netbook market by storm.
