Why Black Friday Forgot About Netbooks

22 November 2008 20 views View Comments

There was a general consensus that this Black Friday, there would be some great deals on netbooks. Despite their prices already being low it made sense to think netbooks would be able to join the party.

Instead the larger full sized notebooks are getting their prices cut and it defintely makes sense. When a netbook already costs $349, there isn’t much room to drive the price down enough to get people to line up to buy one. With a full sized notebook, your able to make the price seem really attractive which will get people in the door.

Also as a retail store most of the profit is made from the sales of warranties. A 10 inch computer that will probably be used as a second or third computer isn’t going to compel someone to spend another $200 or $300 to protect it. The conversation is different when someone thinks they got a $600 computer for $379. It’s not a lot easier to rationalize spending the extra money to make sure if the screen breaks or the CD burner stops working they can get it fixed later on.

Going forward, netbooks may not be a retailers favorite product and Black Friday won’t be any different.
