Linux Fanboys Fear Windows 7
If you like Kool-Aid, there’s a great article on Linux-Watch.com
It makes sense an article bashing Windows 7 would show up on the site, but it completely goes against a couple key facts that appear to be known to everyone but them.
First, almost no consumers user Linux. This is key when it comes to netbooks because netbooks are aimed at schools or business users looking for a PC companion. When people have a problem they want to be able to make changes themselves, or call someone that can help them. Some people can barely turn their computer on and off, it’s hard to believe they’d be able to uninstall a program or troubleshoot a problem with their hardware.
The second point, which goes along with the first point is that Microsoft has a large installed base. There are hundreds of millions of people that live and breath Windows. This isn’t always a good thing but when people go out and have to replace their machine they look at price but after that they look at how they’re going to use it. Walmart tried to sell a netbook with Linux on it and ultimately stopped. Best Buy also tried to sell netbooks with Linux on it only to stop. When it comes down to it, a user wouldn’t want to trade in being able to install millions of programs, have little to no learning curve, and be able to get support from almost anywhere all in the name of a $30 savings.
To each their own, but even people that use Apple’s OS X end up buying a copy of Windows later on.
