Canonical, the makers of Ubuntu Netbook Remix (now Ubuntu Netbook Edition) have made some decision as far as what programs come with their software. Initially it came with OpenOffice from Sun Microsystems but all of that is going to change. As Canonical evaluates the way people actually use netbooks they find that people don’t really use them professionally. They are used mostly for browsing the web which makes Google Docs an easy, but more limiting choice.

Intel’s 6250 Wimax solution is coming. It will allow for an internal solution for netbooks to access Clear’s network of Wimax broadband access.
While Clear’s service isn’t available across all of the US people in areas where the service exists speeds range from 4 to 6 Mbps. It could go all the way up to 14 Mbps with some tweaking on Clear’s side but it comes at a price. Netbooks with Wimax built in suffer from poor battery performance. Continue reading »

Integrated netbook graphic solutions from Intel leave much to be desired. They do very little to allow you to play games, watching online video can be a chore and you have to change operating systems just for the chance of streaming HD video. It seems that Intel has listened to all of the voices complaining with an innovation which will appear in Cedar Trail based netbooks, scheduled to appear in 2011.

If you’ve been enjoying your Pine Trail netbook you might not want to read the rest of this post.
Intel is planning on taking their Intel platform to another level by shrinking the size of their processors down to 32nm. They currently produce their current line of netbook processors as 45nm parts. The benefit of the smaller size is typically lower power consumption which is necessary when it comes to portable computers with limited battery life. Continue reading »

The Asus 1001P is now available in a variety of colors starting at $299. This 10.1″ netbook may not look that extravagant from the outside but it’s a different story when you look at it from the inside.
The nDevil has gone ahead and taken one apart so the rest of us don’t have to. Once you remove the panel on the bottom of the netbook you’re able to add memory. If you want to add more than than you’ll have to do some digging around and remove a whole lot of screws. The 1001P isn’t the ideal netbook for a modder but any netbook pron is worth the look.

Apple thinks the world will fall in love with their iPad and send netbooks into antiquity but there are still lots of things a netbook can do an iPad is unable to do.
CNet breaks it down with the following list:
* Video chat. Most Netbooks, even low-end ones, now have webcams enabling basic video chat over Skype or any other program. The iPad, however, does not. We wish the iPad had a camera and iChat, especially since it would make the tablet a unique communications device to rival the iPhone. Perhaps cost was a factor, even though most Netbooks manage the feat in a package under $500. Continue reading »
